There are positive and negative aspects to the internet. At its best, it is a most wonderful way to communicate and link with others from across the world. I was particularly delighted to recently catch up again with Dmitriy Lobusov, Captain of the world’s largest and most powerful icebreaker, 50 Let Pobedy or ’50 Years of Victory’. Dmitriy and his amazing crew of 105, took us through the frozen Arctic Ocean to the Geographic North Pole in June 2011 when I was working with Quark Expeditions as ship’s photographer and lecturer. I took a photo of Dmitriy in front of his 25,000 shaft hp vessel at the North Pole at about 4.30am on the 1st of July, after the 120 passengers had retired to bed. For me it is a most powerful image, a reminder of this ‘giant of a man’ and our incredible 15 day expedition to the very ‘Top of the World’.
