Alice in Wonderland Weathervane on the Way to Wilmslow

Had a great night giving my Feathers and Wings talk at Wilmslow Guild yesterday. Whilst driving there earlier in the afternoon, the sun popped out so I decided to take a detour via Daresbury.

Famous as the village where Charles Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, was born in 1832 and grew up as a child. His father was the village Parson.

An attractive place, Daresbury is filled with cultural references to this great Victorian – a prodigious children’s author, important photographer and Oxford Mathematics Don.

The most interesting thing I spotted was this quaint and attractive ‘Alice in Wonderland’ weathervane on the roof of the local primary school. It was apparently made by Colin Dale, the village smithy in 1953 to celebrate the Coronation, and donated by him to the school in 1972.

A true gem, it looked wonderful contrasted against yesterday’s bright blue, winter sky.
