My God, Is Nothing Sacred On This Planet?

My God, Is Nothing Sacred On This Planet?

I have been most fortunate to travel to and photograph the unique and stunning wildlife in the Antarctic and Arctic. Probably the key polar species is KRILL. This small crustacean eats plankton, and in turn is eaten by almost everything else, penguins, seals, seabirds and the biggest creature on the planet – the blue whale. Mankind actions are already directly and indirectly threatening the survival of krill nurseries under the ice due to reducing sea ice and warming polar seas.

A few years back Russians, Norwegians and Chinese began harvesting KRILL for use in omega 3 health oils and fish and animal foodstuff. Now the Chinese have announced a huge expansion in KRILL harvesting for human consumption – it has been eaten by humans for many years but only in relatively small amounts. China is proposing a 7 x increase in the quantity it will catch.

Read this article about the proposed Chinese expansion in Krill farming : http://www.theage.com.au/environment/china-moves-in-for-the-krill-20150411-1m9868.html

This will be devastating as KRILL is a very important species for the planet and is thought to have the largest biomass of any species – the total mass of Krill is reckoned to be 6 x the total mass of humans, all 7.3 billion, on the planet.

Mankind seems hell bent on destroying this planet’s precious resources through over fishing, poaching, fossil fuel depletion, pollution, global warming and ecosystem destruction. Things have to change, surely?
