A few years back, whilst researching my ‘Venezia Carnevale’ talk, I obtained permission from The Tate in London to photograph some of JMW Turner‘s ‘Venice paintings’ in the Clore Gallery – a great opportunity to see these masterpieces at very close quarter. Turner was greatly inspired by Venice and its amazing light during his later years. Well today I was reminded of his genius again when I went to see Mike Leigh’s wonderful new film, ‘Mr Turner’, with Timothy Spall in the lead role. A superb film evoking the complexity and genius of Turner. And as you would expect, the cinematography is painterly and awesome. He was and still remains Britain’s finest painter. Here is one of the shots I took in London of a Venice Sunrise by the great man. And don’t miss the film.
