So today, March the 8th, is International Women’s Day and the theme is ‘Make It Happen’. I have been lucky to photograph women at ‘work and play’ across the world, from the remote High Atlas mountains, to bustling Indian and Egyptian villages, the High Arctic, masked women at the Venezia Carnevale, and ‘ladies’ just having a good day out in Liverpool, as illustrated here.
My photographs of women are usually inspired by their spirit and strong character which comes across through expressive eyes or generous smiles. Some of the happiest, heart warming smiles I have seen have been from women in some of the ‘poorest’ places in the world. So it does make you think about the west – its ‘riches’ and consumer society, and whether it makes any of us really happy.
So here is to brave, spirited and determined women worldwide to ‘make it happen’ in their lives.
